Truck Insurance for Melbourne and Victorian Operators

Insuregroup is a specialist truck and heavy vehicle insurance broker that arranges cover for transport businesses across Australia, including owner-drivers and fleets based in Melbourne and regional Victoria. We work with Victorian operators by phone and online from our Brisbane office. We look at how your trucks are actually used, then compare options across our network of insurers.

For national and interstate operations, see our main truck insurance Australia page. For a closer look at port, metro and overnight parking risks, read our guide Truck Insurance Melbourne: Port, Metro and Overnight Risks.

What to expect

How Victorian Truck Work Differs

The mix of work in and around Melbourne shapes the risks insurers look at:

  • Port and container work. Trucks collecting and delivering containers at the Port of Melbourne, empty container parks and warehouses spend a lot of time in queues, yards and busy traffic. Skeletal trailers and side-loaders should be declared as separate items; see semi-trailer insurance and trailer-in-control cover.
  • Metro delivery. Rigid trucks doing multi-drop runs face stop-start traffic, tight loading docks and reversing in public places, which produces a steady run of low-speed claims.
  • Construction and civil work. Tippers, dump trucks and crane trucks working on building and civil sites bring site access, loading and public liability questions.
  • Regional and interstate runs. Trucks based in Melbourne often head to regional Victoria or interstate. The area of operation you declare should match where the truck really goes. See prime mover insurance.
  • Overnight parking. Where a truck is kept overnight, such as a depot or a driver’s street, is recorded on the policy and affects how insurers view theft risk.

Victorian Rules That Affect Your Truck Insurance

The Heavy Vehicle National Law Applies in Victoria

Victoria applies the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL), which the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) administers for vehicles over 4.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass. Access permits for Victorian roads are handled through the NHVR portal. Compliance with fatigue, mass, dimension and speed rules can affect how a claim is assessed. Our guide on the HVNL and truck insurance explains the link.

The TAC Charge Is Not Truck Insurance

In Victoria, the Transport Accident Charge is paid with vehicle registration and funds the Transport Accident Commission (TAC), which pays for treatment and support for people injured in transport accidents. It does not cover damage to your truck, to other vehicles or to property. That needs a commercial motor policy. Our guide to compulsory third party versus comprehensive cover explains the difference.

Declare Radius and Routes

Insurers usually ask where the truck operates and how far from base it travels. A truck declared for metro work that regularly runs interstate may not be rated for that use. Declare regular long runs and the states you travel through.

Types of Truck Cover We Arrange in Victoria

Comprehensive Cover

Covers accidental damage to your truck, theft, and your legal liability for damage to other people’s vehicles and property, subject to the policy terms.

Fire, Theft and Third Party Property

Covers fire and theft of your truck plus your liability for damage you cause to others.

Third Party Property Only

Covers your legal liability for damage to other people’s vehicles and property, but not damage to your own truck.

Options Worth Asking About

Who We Work With

We work with owner-drivers, subcontractors, family transport businesses and larger fleets running container, general freight, construction, agricultural and refrigerated work. Our comparison of linehaul and metro delivery risks is a useful starting point.
