Truck Insurance for Adelaide and South Australian Operators

Insuregroup is a specialist truck and heavy vehicle insurance broker that arranges cover for transport businesses across Australia, including owner-drivers and fleets based in Adelaide and regional South Australia. We work with South Australian operators by phone and online from our Brisbane office. We look at how your trucks are actually used, then compare options across our network of insurers.

For national and interstate operations, see our main truck insurance Australia page.

What to expect

How South Australian Truck Work Differs

  • Port and metro freight. Trucks serving Port Adelaide and Outer Harbor, and the industrial areas and distribution centres of Adelaide’s north and west, deal with yard work, loading and busy arterial roads such as the Port River Expressway and the Northern Connector.
  • Interstate runs. Long interstate runs make breakdown, towing and recovery limits worth a close look. See prime mover insurance and semi-trailer insurance.
  • Agricultural and rural transport. Regional operators carry grain, livestock and produce, often seasonally and on rural roads. See our guide on rural and remote transport insurance.
  • Construction and quarry work. Tippers, dump trucks and tilt trays bring site access and loading questions.
  • Refrigerated freight. Food and produce carriers should check cover for refrigerated trucks.

South Australian Rules That Affect Your Truck Insurance

The Heavy Vehicle National Law Applies in South Australia

South Australia applies the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL), which the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) administers for vehicles over 4.5 tonnes gross vehicle mass. The state’s Department for Infrastructure and Transport is also developing a High Productivity Vehicle Network for freight, so access arrangements for larger combinations may change. Compliance with fatigue, mass, dimension and speed rules can affect how a claim is assessed. Our guide on the HVNL and truck insurance explains the link.

SA CTP Insures Injury, Not Your Truck

In South Australia, Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance is paid with vehicle registration and sold by approved insurers on terms set by the state’s CTP Regulator. It covers injury or death caused to other people and is fault-based. It does not cover damage to your truck, to other vehicles or to property. That needs a commercial motor policy. Our guide to compulsory third party versus comprehensive cover explains the difference.

Declare Radius and Routes

Insurers usually ask where the truck operates and how far from base it travels. A truck declared for metro work that regularly runs interstate may not be rated for that use. Declare regular long runs, rural work and the states you travel through.

Types of Truck Cover We Arrange in South Australia

Comprehensive Cover

Covers accidental damage to your truck, theft, and your legal liability for damage to other people’s vehicles and property, subject to the policy terms.

Fire, Theft and Third Party Property

Covers fire and theft of your truck plus your liability for damage you cause to others.

Third Party Property Only

Covers your legal liability for damage to other people’s vehicles and property, but not damage to your own truck.

Options Worth Asking About

  • Goods in transit or carrier’s liability for the loads you carry
  • Towing and recovery limits that reflect remote breakdowns
  • Downtime or loss of income cover while an insured truck is being repaired; see how truck downtime affects contracts and cash flow
  • Public liability at the limit your contracts require, with a certificate of currency ready before you start
  • Fleet insurance once you run several trucks

Who We Work With

We work with owner-drivers, subcontractors, family transport businesses and larger fleets running freight, construction, agricultural and refrigerated work. Our comparison of linehaul and metro delivery risks is a useful starting point.
