Truck Insurance for Western Australian Operators

Insuregroup is a specialist truck and heavy vehicle insurance broker that arranges cover for transport businesses across Australia, including owner-drivers and fleets based in Perth and regional Western Australia. We work with WA operators by phone and online from our Brisbane office, and look at how your trucks are actually used before comparing options across our network of insurers.

For national and interstate operations, see our main truck insurance Australia page.

What to expect

How WA Truck Work Differs

Western Australia’s distances and road network shape the risks insurers look at:

  • Long regional runs. Operators run north on the Great Northern Highway and North West Coastal Highway towards the Pilbara and Kimberley, east on the Great Eastern Highway to the Goldfields, and up the Brand Highway towards the Mid West.
  • Road trains and multi-combinations. Larger combinations are common on WA’s regional networks, so how each prime mover and trailer is declared matters. See prime mover insurance, semi-trailer insurance and trailer-in-control cover.
  • Mining and resources work. Trucks servicing mine sites, camps and resource projects may face site access conditions and contract insurance requirements from head contractors. See mining insurance.
  • Perth metro and port freight. Container and general freight between Fremantle Port, industrial areas and distribution centres brings frequent loading, yard work and busy metro traffic.
  • Interstate across the Nullarbor. Trucks running east on the Eyre Highway cover long distances between towns, so breakdown, towing and recovery limits deserve a close look.

WA Rules That Affect Your Truck Insurance

WA Has Its Own Heavy Vehicle Regulator

The Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) has not commenced in Western Australia. Within WA, Main Roads WA’s Heavy Vehicle Services is the heavy vehicle regulator. It manages Restricted Access Vehicle (RAV) networks and permits, oversize and over-mass movements, and the WA Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme (WAHVA). When a WA truck crosses into a state where the HVNL applies, the HVNL applies to it there, so if you run interstate your compliance setup needs to cover both. Our guide on the HVNL and truck insurance explains how compliance links to claims.

Motor Injury Insurance Is Not Truck Insurance

WA-registered vehicles carry motor injury insurance through the Insurance Commission of Western Australia, which covers injuries caused to other people in a crash anywhere in Australia. It is injury cover only. Damage to your truck, to other vehicles or to property needs a commercial motor policy. Our guide to compulsory third party versus comprehensive cover explains the difference.

Declare Radius and Routes

Insurers usually ask where the truck operates and how far from base it travels. A truck declared for metro work that regularly runs to the Pilbara or interstate may not be rated for that use. Declare regular long runs, remote area work and the states you travel through.

Options Worth Asking About

Before you buy

Common Exclusions to Check

Every policy is different, and the Product Disclosure Statement sets out the full terms. Exclusions that matter for WA work often include:

  • Use, radius or drivers that were not declared to the insurer, such as remote or interstate runs on a policy rated for metro work
  • Combinations or trailers that were not declared
  • Drivers who were unlicensed for the vehicle class, or under the influence
  • Overloading or operating outside permit conditions, depending on the wording
  • Wear and tear, mechanical breakdown and gradual damage
  • Damage to the load itself, unless goods in transit cover is in place

What Affects the Cost in WA

There is no standard price for truck insurance in Perth or anywhere else. Insurers look at the vehicle and its value, how it is used, the radius and routes, the goods carried, driver history, the excess you choose and your claims record. Long remote runs and larger combinations are part of that picture. Our guide on how much truck insurance costs in Australia explains each factor.

Who We Work With

We work with owner-drivers, subcontractors, family transport businesses and larger fleets running freight, construction, resources, agricultural and refrigerated work. Our guide on rural and remote transport insurance and our comparison of linehaul and metro delivery risks are useful starting points.

Questions We Get Asked

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Heavy Vehicle National Law apply in WA?

The HVNL has not commenced in Western Australia. Within WA, Main Roads WA's Heavy Vehicle Services regulates heavy vehicles. A WA truck that crosses into a state where the HVNL applies must comply with it there.

Does WA motor injury insurance cover damage to my truck?

No. Motor injury insurance on WA-registered vehicles covers injuries caused to other people. Damage to your truck, other vehicles or property needs a commercial motor policy.

Do you have an office in Perth?

No. Our office is in Brisbane, and we work with WA operators by phone and online.

Can you insure road trains and multi-combinations?

Yes, we can approach insurers for prime movers and the trailers in each combination. Declare every trailer and the combinations you run so the cover matches how you operate.

Does it matter if my truck runs to the Pilbara or interstate?

Yes. Insurers rate trucks on their radius and routes. If a truck regularly runs remote or interstate, declare it, or a claim on those runs could be affected.

How much does truck insurance cost in Perth?

There is no standard price. It depends on the truck, how it is used, the radius, the goods carried, the drivers, the excess and your claims history. A quote for your own trucks is the only reliable figure.
